2025 Olympia CBC Results
2025 Olympia CBC Results Bill Shelmerdine WAOL Compiler The 2025 Olympia Christmas Bird Count was held Sunday, December 14th. There were 103 volunteer counters in 16 teams (working assigned count areas) and as individuals watching feeders on their home turf. The weather for count day was cooperative, mild with a bit of light rain late in the day. Rain and wind during the dark early morning and evening hours hampered most attempts at finding owls, however. Collectively this year’s counters tallied 130 different species of birds and 39,764 total birds. The species count is a bit above the long-term average
2025 Lewis County CBC Results
2025 Lewis County CBC Results By Rachel Holland, WALC Compiler Though the weather was annoying and unpredictable for many of us, with bouts of soaking rain and wind followed by calm skies, 40 amazing volunteers still committed themselves to the event and tackled everything our local fields, feeders, forests, trails, roads, and sidewalks had to offer. We had a wonderful variety of people helping us with the count this year, from new-to-CBC volunteers, to ones who had never birded in our circle before, to those who have diligently covered the same areas for years; so many great souls participated and

2024 Lewis County Christmas Bird Count Results By Rachel Hudson, Compiler On December 21st, 40 participants across 23 groups/singles of both field birders and feeder-watchers joined together to contribute to Lewis County’s eighth Christmas Bird Count. Despite the strangely warm, shower-y weather and many groups feeling rather birdless this year, we had our second-best year ever for total species, third best year ever for total individual birds, and scored 20 total high counts, 2 tied high counts with previous years, and three Count Firsts! Our Species Total for 2024 is… 108! This is second only to last year, which had a
GBBC February 2025
Every winter we see more of certain birds at our feeders, while others disappear. Each February, for four days, the world comes together to celebrate birds, and to help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations. It’s that time again, time for the 2025 Great Backyard Bird Count. This year, the counting will be done between February 14 and 17. The Great Backyard Bird Count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada. I joined in 2024. It’s easy and fun to join and participate. Just
Olympia CBC – Thank You
OLYMPIA CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT 2024—THANK YOU Although we don’t yet have the results of the two Black Hills Audubon Christmas Bird Counts that occurred in December, we are filled with memories and appreciation of those who did the work to make this a success. Above is Jen DeSelle’s NE Olympia team at a local bakery before heading out, in the rain, to count all the birds seen and heard. All counts must be done within a 15 mile diameter circle that cannot be moved once established. Many teams were needed to cover these areas and we thank all the volunteers
Christmas Bird Count 2024
It’s fun, it’s important, and this year it is 125 years old. It’s the Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. The CBC has become a happy tradition for volunteers in over 20 countries in the western Hemisphere. Each year it is conducted between December 14 and January 5, and last year 83,000 volunteers counted 40 million birds representing 2,000 species during the CBC. Birders of all skill levels are welcome to join the CBC. But to participate you need to join an existing CBC circle in your area. Black Hills Audubon runs two circle counts each year. Those interested will
