Again, our avid listener to birds and the people who observe them has compiled more humorous statements she overheard while out in the field with chapter members. Enjoy!
“I’m surprised at how a bird can change its species so easily, even while you’re looking at it!.”
“Is it a siskin?”
“Well, it’s not a pine–or an oak siskin, or
an alder siskin.”
John: “Is that a junco or a song sparrow?”
Del: “A junco.”
John: “Are you sure?”
Del: “Yes, It’s not “smacky” enough.”
Ed: “What is a group of ravens called?”
(Everyone pauses, looks around, thinks….” uh, uh…”)
Lisa: “It’s a murder of crows if you can find probable cause!”
Sheila: “Crows are a murder, but ravens are a despair? Was it despair? Something sad…”
Jayne looks it up: “An unkindness! Also, a congress!”
Sheila: “I knew it was something depressing.”
Forrest: “How many pippits have you seen today, Wally?”
Wally: “One today, so I’m able to keep track.”
Random birder looking through binoculars: ”Is everyone on the hairy?”
An observation about the Swainson’s Thrush.
Beth: “Swainsons are so skulky.”
Charles chimes in explaining that he looked and looked for a Swainson’s, finally found one when he was alone in the woods and started dancing he was so happy!
Sarah: “If a person dances in the woods and no one is around, are they really dancing?”
Kevin: “I could smell Savannahs on the wind.”
Carol getting impatient to find a hermit thrush.
Kevin: “He’ll come out by and by…time, patience, and perseverance accomplish all things.”
“There’s something up there.”
The tree fills with unidentified birds.
Several birders exclaim at once, “There’s a whole lot of somethings up there!”

Patricia: “What do you see?”
Kevin: “A curve billed thrasher.”
At Woodard Bay:
Stevie: “Those kinglets are just so fast.”
Harry: “They don’t pause, that’s for sure.”
Steve: “They seriously have ADHD.”
