Learn what’s being done to promote avian conservation at the local level with Gary Slater, Executive Director, Ecostudies Institute.
Gary’s passion for birds began as a child watching chickadees at the family bird feeder. That early exposure eventually led to nearly 30 years of experience in avian research and conservation, including work in the Pacific Northwest, South Florida, Venezuela, and the Bahamas.
Gary founded Ecostudies Institute in 2001, and he has worked to identify situations where the organization’s knowledge, experience, and skills can be most effective in advancing the conservation of birds and other wildlife and their habitats. Most recently, his work has focused on conserving imperiled birds in prairie-oak habitats. His research interests span a wide variety of applied conservation issues, including the re-introduction ecology of passerine bird species, the impacts of management on avian populations, and the demographic factors limiting small populations.
Gary received a B.S. in Wildlife Science from Purdue University and a M.S. in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Florida. Outside of the office, he enjoys gardening and many other outdoor activities.
There are two ways to enjoy this program. You can come to Temple Beth Hatfiloh (201 8th Ave. SE, Olympia) to watch the speaker live and enjoy the company of others OR you can register above to watch from home via Zoom.
Zoom will start at 7 pm and those coming to the Temple can arrive for social time at 6:30 pm.
