THE HIDDEN LIVES OF COMMON NIGHTHAWKS
Gretchen Newberry, PhD
November 13th 7 pm via Zoom, register below
Have you ever wanted to know more about nighthawks and other nightjars? Gretchen Newberry describes them as “reptiles with feathers”. They have the ability to withstand extreme temperatures, have a migration route that stretches from Alaska to Argentina, and can adapt to many habitats but they are struggling to survive in the Anthropocene age. This talk will explore this mysterious order of birds – how nighthawks live among us in urban areas, how we can have hope for the future of biodiversity, and how we can help aerial insectivores.
The author of The Nighthawk’s Evening: Notes of a Field Biologist, Gretchen has been studying this fascinating species for years. She is a biologist with a PhD from the University of South Dakota who now resides in Portland. The book charts her journey across North America to study these birds, from the islands of British Columbia to rooftops in South Dakota, from Oregon sagebrush to Wisconsin forests.
You can join us for this presentation in two ways. Either register with Zoom and watch Gretchen from home or come down to Temple Beth Hatfiloh. We will have social time at 6:30 (refreshments included) and then watch the presentation on the big screen there at 7 pm. Either way the subject will be fascinating!
