South Sound Bird Alliance has an outstanding committee of dedicated volunteers who are getting the message out, “CATS AND BIRDS DON’T MIX”. The goal of the Cats Indoors Campaign is to raise awareness in cat owners of the benefits of keeping cats indoors and in outdoor enclosures. These benefits extend to cats, birds and other wildlife, and cat owners.
Members of our committee include folks from both Grays Harbor Audubon and Tahoma Bird Alliance. Partnering with other Audubon chapters strengthens and widens our message. Take a look at this graphic from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to understand the impact that cats have had on our bird populations.
Committee members have worked over the past month to distribute our brochures and posters to veterinarian clinics, animal-focused retail stores, and other community settings (especially public libraries). To date, twenty-eight veterinary clinics, eighteen retail stores, and fourteen other spaces have either our brochures or posters on display. We have covered Thurston and Lewis Counties well and will move to cover Mason County this summer.
Hats go off to these amazing volunteers – Courtney Miller, Kathy Prosser, Maureen Dannen, Sabra Noyes, Tom Reynolds, and Zephyra Burt. We also partnered with Claire Kerwin from WDFW who has started a similar “Love Cats, Love Wildlife” campaign. A special thanks goes to Sally Nole who designed our catio poster, above.
