Public Land Sale Action Alert

ACTION ALERT

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee introduced their budget reconciliation bill language which mandates the sale of up to approximately 3 million acres of public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.  Far greater areas would be made eligible for sale.

The lands mandated or eligible for sale include substantial areas in Washington State including swaths in the Olympics, Cascades, Yakima River Canyon, and beyond.

Our public lands are vital areas for wildlife. In many cases, they are the largest remaining tracts of habitat available for wildlife. But these public lands also provide countless other benefits to us: clean water and air; mitigation against climate change; places to hike and camp; places to forage, hunt, and fish; and opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of cities to enjoy the beauty of nature.

These places belong to all of us.

Congress should be working to strengthen our public lands heritage, not siphon it off. Selling or developing our public lands without engaging local communities or reinvesting in conservation compromises a promise made to all Americans — and dismisses the voices of millions of Americans who cherish these landscapes.

We urge you to contact your Senators today, thank them for opposing this public land give-away , and urge them to do all they can to convince other senators to do the same .
