South Sound Bird Alliance is a premier environmental organization in Thurston, Mason, and Lewis counties. These areas are growing in population so the SSBA Board designated a Membership Campaign as a priority in 2026. Since January, two committees have been working on that priority.
In Mason County, the committee is comprised of Janis Snoey, Kristin McCarty, Anthony Freiss, Elizabeth Berndt, Mike Reese, Sarah Croston, Mary Frey, and Harry Griffith. You might have read about the group’s parade entry in the Shelton Paul Bunyon Parade in late May. The committee also started up the monthly Shelton Birds and Brew (see other Echo article for August day/time), participated in the July Shelton Arts Walk, and will have an information table at Oysterfest at the Shelton airport in October. Go Mason County!
The Lewis/Thurston County committee is very active as well. Rachel Holland, Mary Ann Sutton, and Lisa Genuit have set up holiday gift memberships, put up an informational display at the Great Blue Heron rookery by the Olympia Farmer’s Market, have sponsored bird talks at senior citizen venues, did a promotional event at the Olympia Farmer’s Market, and are working on a partnership with Childhood’s End Gallery for an avian art show in 2028. In August, the committee is setting up two displays – one at the Lacey Timberland Library and one on the Capitol Way N sidewalk window display of Harbor Heights Apartments.
